Coconut water – the drink of choice for hipsters and workout enthusiasts. And the occasional armchair survivalist whose understanding of medical terminology extended to urban myths and the occasional TV show.

No surprise, then, that Marilyn eyed the shaved coconut with some trepidation. She was a proper lady, not some young fool who insisted on building muscles like a man doing weightlifting and eschewing proper cardio exercises like water aerobics.

The cook – easily seen through the open window, and at least that meant she could see how spotless the kitchen was or else she would never have even dared touch something from a place like this – had taken his machete to the coconut, lopping off the sides and shaving off the top with a few practiced strokes. Now the top could be easily seen, a metal straw sticking out of it and a small teaspoon set beside the plate.

A metal straw. What happened to good old plastic? “Are they trying to chip my teeth? You know I’ll sue if they do…” Marilyn muttered, eyeing the straw with concern.

“It’s probably for the environment,” Amir said. “You can rewash the straws.”

“And get inside properly?” Marilyn pulled a disgusted face.

“There are small brushes that go into the straws.” Moving his hand over the entire display, he leaned back after a moment in satisfaction. “It’s clear. No poisons, nothing of concern. Cleaner, actually, than most places we eat at.”

Unlike this location. Which was scarily clean. In fact, they could have eaten straight off the table. A thought that had the man staring at the table itself, consideringly.

“Well, I guess one must make do. I am parched,” Marilyn said, before slipping the metal straw between her cherry-red lips with care. She pursed her lips so that the straw would not touch her teeth, and sucked on the coconut.

Coconut water was, naturally, extremely mild in taste. There was the slight tingle from the electrolytes that were part of the coconut, a tiny bit of saltiness and sweet with an aftertaste of nuttiness. The drink was rather refreshing, and now that Marilyn had dried off, invigorating.

Sipping on the drink more contemplatively, Marilyn was reminded of a case in the sixties that had dragged her to Thailand. An annoying rogue mage who had used his magic to create counterfeit bills, in such quantity that the Mage Council had to step in.

Her first real case, and when she had finally caught him after staking out his residence for days on end along a deserted beach, she had seen fit to take small break. Away from the prying eyes of the Council and her husband, she had spent a week lying in the sun, soaking up the
